7 FUN resolutions to start 2017 with a smile. (and only take 10 minutes or less)
People either seem to love making 'New Years Resolutions' or they don't. People seem to be strongly either for them or against them. So what is in a resolution anyway? Definition by Google says: "a firm decision to do or not to do something". I am a fan of resolutions as they are usually about intentionally setting out to improve one's self... which is after all a life long affair.
I'm just not so sure about the "New Years" bit seeing as one can resolve to improve on something on any day of the year you choose!
Anyhow, the beginning of a new year does somehow feel like a new clean sheet of paper to start afresh.
So, if you were to choose a resolution or two, what would yours be?
The usual ones often go like this: lose weight, drink less, exercise more, spend less time on my phone apps ...
The thing is, even though these seems like easy goals to achieve, when we dig deeper we find they are riddled with complexities at their root and take quite a substantial amount of time and energy to realise. By all means go for it! All of the above goals are admirable and definitely worth achieving, yet I want to encourage you to not ignore some of the smaller more fun filled and simple changes you can make that will only take a few minutes a day, yet can make a BIG difference in your quest for a better self.
Here are 7 quick and fun resolutions for you to accomplish in 10 minutes or less:
1. Journal 5 things you are grateful for Anyone following my blog posts will notice that this one has been a kind of theme for 2016. So, if you have not already embraced this one! Now is as good a time as any to start. In fact, even doing this just once a week has proven benefits. Read here to see the proof! 2. Laugh more, sing more Both laughing and singing have been shown to reduce stress and improve mood... so when you're feeling down, turn up the volume to your favourite tunes and start singing! People also tend to laugh more in groups, so hang out with friends that laugh - it's really contagious! 3. Tune in to your posture Have you ever noticed someone oozing great self confidence while slouching? Chin up, shoulders back and take a deep breath...feel taller and better already? Click here for a more comprehensive guide on how to improve your posture. 4. The art of the power nap This one is possibly my favourite! Studies have shown that a 10 minute nap is more effective than a 20-30 minute snooze for improving alertness and energy, clearing up that afternoon brain fog, and reducing fatigue. I use this at least once or twice a week... highly recommended as your next newest habit! 5. Stand more Many of us end up with long hours of prolonged sitting in our work space. If this is you, then be sure to break up your long sitting spells with short periods of standing at least every hour. Research has shown that even a 2-minute walk is enough to help prevent or reduce sitting’s adverse effects. There are also a few great apps like out there such as "stand up" to help remind you when it's time. 6. Meditate There is nothing quite like the practice of mindful resting. Quieting your body and mind to 'be still' for even only 10 minutes has been linked to a wide range of health benefits. This takes some practice at first, but it's well worth persisting and will get easier and easier with practice. 7. Let your tea steep Yes, you read that right! Studies of tea chemistry have found that steeping tea for at least 3 minutes increases the release of polyphenols. These are the chemicals in tea that have antioxidant and other beneficial properties, and which may account for many of tea’s health benefits. Besides which, this gives you good reason to stand for a few minutes and the mindfully stare out of the window meditating all at once! Wishing you all a fabulous New Year and a 2017 that is your best year yet! That's all from me folks for 2016! Thank you for travelling with me during this year. I am really looking forward to 2017 as a year of more growth, fulfilment and definitely more fun! If you've been wondering about how to navigate this next season well, yet you're not sure where to start, then give me a call! I would love to connect with you, to hear your story and to share how coaching can give you the direction you are looking for.
