Where oh where are my keys?!?
The other day I was having a conversation with a friend around why we know we want to declutter to simplify life, yet just don’t seem to get to it.
The main reason that kept resurfacing was the fact that the job often seems to be bigger than Ben-Hur.
You start looking around at where to start, and you notice it's everywhere!!
It doesn’t take much to decide that it’s definitely a job for a rainy day. The thing is, where we live, rainy days just doesn’t come around too often… And when they do, a movie and pop corn wins hands down each time. And so this decluttering that we REALLY DO WANT TO DO gets shelved to the back burner once more.
This got me thinking. What if I don’t make it such a big job? What if I were to break it down into small jobs by picking only one small area to declutter? One that would only take a few minutes but would actually make a BIG difference to my every day life. What would that one small area be?
My handbag immediately came to mind! (I'm a handbag kinda gal)
If I could only clean out and declutter my handbag what a HUGE difference that could make!
I’m forever rummaging through my handbag in search of lipstick, keys, pens… Let’s talk about lipstick for a moment. For some reason, when I do manage to locate a lipstick from within the depths of my bag (I usually have about three somewhere in there), Murphy’s Law is that I usually seem to fish out the wrong colour one first! When by some luck I do actually find the one I’m after first time around I'm really quite surprised.
Does this happen to you too?
And keys… how many times a week do I get to the end of shopping for groceries, and while approaching my car with a half loaded trolley, I lift my shoulder to my ear so that my hand can reach down into my bag in search of the keys. The digging starts. First the little inside pocket where they should be. Not there. Then the outside pocket. Not there. So I have to dig deeper, but my hand can’t reach deeper unless I stop and actually take my handbag off my shoulder. I stop. I Sigh. I lift it onto the top of the trolley to really start rummaging… and sometimes to my despair they just aren’t there!! My heart sinks as I mentally retrace my steps during the last hour to think where on earth they could be. That thought makes me more than ever determined to find them in my bag! So I end up emptying my handbag out onto the bonnet of my car….and what a relief! There they are!
I’m not kidding. I’ve done this not only once, but MANY times!!! Each time I mutter at how I really should sort out my bag. But a minute later I’m in the car, music is on, and before long the thought about the state of my handbag is no longer anywhere near the front of my mind… until tomorrow or the next day when once again I am walking towards my car with the groceries….
So, I finally decided to give it a go. I emptied my handbag out onto my bed and sorted the "must-haves" from the clutter. Once sorted, more than half the clutter ended up in the bin and the rest went into a box on my desk so I do actually know where to find it when I need it. Then I went about putting the "must-haves" back in…one at a time. One lipstick, two pens, wallet, business cards, phone, note book, keys. I deliberately take note of which pocket I’ve put each into. My bag now weighs almost half of what it did before! Happy days! The house is still filled with clutter I know, but my handbag is not. It's been a week since I cleared out my bag and now I'm wondering what took me so long.
Because my bag goes everywhere I go, it has literally made a huge difference to each day.
I know, I know.... give it a month and I'll have to repeat my handbag declutter ritual. But for me, I've figured out it is oh so worth it!
So, how about you? What one small area would you choose to declutter that will make a big difference to your days? Leave your comment below to let me know. I’d love to hear!
