Decrees vs Matras

What's the difference anyway? Why this is simply useful to know.

We often hear people speak about including mantras in their daily rituals these days, and don't hear about decrees much...

Secular coach training teaches the proven effectiveness of using mantras as a way to secure a desired state of mind so you can be your best you. During my coaching training I understood the teaching and started to implement my own daily mantras. Yet each time I spoke them, I felt the nudging of the Holy Spirit urging me to swap out my mantra for one of His decrees... Let me explain.

Lets start by looking at decrees.

What does it mean to decree something? According to the Webster 1828 Dictionary, the word decree can be used as a noun or a verb.

As a noun with regards to theology a decree is this:

- the predetermined purpose of God, which is unchangeable.

As a verb to decree something means this:

- to determine or resolve - to fix or appoint - to set or constitute by edict or in purpose.

So when you decree something, you don't just repeatedly speak out positive words, hoping you'll soon believe them. A decree uses scripture (the predetermined purpose of God).

You then determine to claim it. You set it and fix it with purpose.

We know that scripture is God inspired. 2 Timothy 3:16 -17 tells us that all scripture is God-breathed. We also know from reading Isaiah 55 that His word (scripture) when spoken does not return empty, but achieves it's purpose.

This is so incredibly powerful because what this means is that when you decree scripture over your life (as with these wall paper downloads) what you're really doing is this: You are determining to set and fix God's breathed and living Word as unchangeable truth in your life.  And we know that His Word is not empty, but achieves it's purpose. In other words, His Word becomes your truth. It becomes your reality. It becomes your rock; the solid foundation on which you can stand firm.

His spoken Word has the power to literally transform your heart and mind. When your thoughts about you line up with His thoughts about you, you'll find great life, lightness and fullness of joy.

So, for example, when you decree that you are in fact "the apple of His eye"... you are not just speaking nice self thought out words and trying hard to believe them. You are in fact resolving to fix His living truth as your own heart truth, and because it's His living word, it will achieve it's purpose in you. Decreeing His word is a powerful way of renewing your mind and the thoughts of your heart with His truth about you.

How is this different to a mantra?

The Merriam Webster dictionary defines a mantra as this:

Mantra - A mystical formula of invocation or incantation. An invocation is an act of petitioning for help.

An incantation is a recited formula of words used as part of a ritual of magic; designed to produce a particular effect.

In my coach training, we are taught that mantras are an effective way of helping someone to set a desired "state of mind” in order to help them achieve more of what they want. For example, if you’re filled with a sense of low self worth, you could use the words “I am enough” as your mantra to remind yourself that you are in fact able.

Mantras are self scripted words (either your own words or someone else’s). They are not God's spoken word. The act of resolving to include mantras into everyday rituals has been found by many to be effective, yet because they are words of self or words of others, and not Gods spoken word, they are not nearly as anointed and powerful as a God breathed decree.

So, if you're someone who likes mantras and finds benefit when including them in your life, I encourage you to switch them for His spoken Word.

Have a go... swap your mantra out by replacing it with a decree.

I encourage you to spend some time in prayer with God and His Word. If you have not invited Jesus into your heart yet and would like to, it is not complicated or difficult to do. Please feel free to connect with me here and I’ll walk you through it.

I’d love to connect with you and pray this with you. You’ll soon find scripture that stirs your heart and speaks directly to you. You can then use the scriptures that stir your heart and speak them as daily decrees in your life.

The following are a few examples of mantras and possible decrees to replace them with... The bible is filled with many different decrees and promises for those who believe in Jesus. Here are a few that you can use to decree in your life.

You’ll see the mantra on the left... and then a possible decree to replace it with on the right.

p.s. It’s even more powerful when the Holy Spirit gives you your own personal decrees to speak into your life.
